When we set out to create TAMI (Tech Assist & Maintenance Information), we envisioned a tool designed for the shop environment that empowers technicians and simplifies their work. But like any innovation, TAMI’s journey turned out to be challenging.

A Data Dilemma: Building Our Knowledge Base

One of our biggest hurdles was finding a collaborator willing to share comprehensive service information data. I began receiving emails politely declining as fast as I sent them. For now, we needed basic maintenance recommendations based on mileage. Not having this information will become a pressing issue later on down the road when technicians need more detailed information. Still, I am confident someone will come around.

As ASE-certified technicians and diagnostic experts, we recognize the immense value of accurate and practical repair knowledge. It’s hard enough to come by in a shop environment, let alone the Internet. For instance, have you ever received a repair estimate with six ignition coils slapped onto the ticket for a mileage-based tune-up? Ask your true technician friend, and they will most likely tell you to skip the coils. Or they are not your friend.

The existing AI and research solutions available to the public often fall prey to misinformation and car myths. The same myths are perpetuated by parts distributors and flush machine manufacturers who skew advice for their gain.

This gap in reliable information birthed an idea: what if we created our database? A library of tried-and-true techniques refined in real-world shop settings. These are the ones that we use every day to solve issues accurately. So, we discovered that leveraging the various AI models with our SQL database is much more accurate and provides a more natural language, making it more user-friendly.

A Tech’s Perspective

Unlike parts-driven advice, our diagnoses come from a place of logic, technical understanding, and years of experience. We don’t push for unnecessary repairs or upselling parts because our focus isn’t the sale; it’s solving the problem. This unbiased approach is the foundation of TAMI.

While existing AI often stumbles on simple questions due to a lack of quality data, TAMI is different. For just $5 a month, car owners can gain access to a real “mechanic friend” in their pocket.

TAMI will take a picture of your repair estimate, analyze it, advise you accurately, and save you from unnecessary services or upsells. That ignition coil scenario typically adds $50 to $100 to your repair bill per coil.
