Common Upsells and Unnecessary Services at Auto Repair Shops

Most car owners know the feeling: you go in for a simple oil change and walk out with a long list of “urgent” repairs. Some items are valid – but many are upsells meant to pad the bill. Here are the most common ones to watch for:

1. Mileage-Based Recommendations

Stick to what’s in your owner’s manual. If a shop suggests replacing shocks at 120k miles but your manual doesn’t call for it, that’s an upsell. If it’s not on the manufacturer’s schedule, you can safely decline.

2. Fluid Flushes

Coolant, transmission, and power steering flushes are some of the most oversold services. Most manuals only call for a drain and refill, not a flush with a machine. If you are not addressing a repair, the book doesn’t mention it, and the shop insists otherwise, consider finding a new shop.

3. Fuel System Cleaners

This is a favorite add-on, but unnecessary in most cases. Modern gasoline already has detergents built in. Skip the bottle of “fuel treatment” and just buy from stations that sell Top Tier fuel.

4. Induction Services

Manufacturers rarely recommend routine induction or injector cleaning. In fact, many advise against it unless there’s a diagnosed issue like rough running or carbon buildup. If your car runs fine, you don’t need it. If you are having carbon problems they may help. Your money is better spent pulling the intake and using a walnut blaster to clean the intake.

5. Addressing Leaks Too Early

Not all leaks are equal. A little seepage that takes months to form a drop isn’t worth chasing down.

    • Seepage: Just monitor it but it’s good to know about.

    • Drops forming: Keep an eye on fluid levels at your stops and plan for a future repair.

    • Dripping: Now it’s time to fix it.
Shops often jump to sell a dye test or teardown when it’s not yet necessary.

How to Protect Yourself

    • Check your manual for true service intervals.

    • Ask for proof—dirty fluid, worn parts, or photos.

    • Don’t rush—say, “I’ll think about it and schedule if needed.”
